At Haystack we worked on several research threads. One focused on developing materials foraged from the campus, nearby beach and collected from daily food waste. Keep in mind that developing biomaterials requires embracing a certain amount of imprecision. These materials will not be as consistent or replicable as industrially fabricated materials such as PLA. Be patient and aware that variables such as water temperature, humidity in the room, and ghosts in the machine mean that every print is unique.

SUMMER 2026 SESSION 2 FAB LAB RESIDENTS
Shelby Elizabeth Doyle (she/her), AIA is a registered architect, Associate Professor of Architecture at the Iowa State University (ISU) College of Design, and co-founder of the ISU Computation & Construction Lab (CCL). The CCL works to connect developments in computation to the challenges of construction through teaching, research, and outreach. Doyle received a Fulbright Fellowship to Cambodia, a Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and a Bachelor of Science in architecture from the University of Virginia. @shelbyedoyle | shelbydoyle.com

Leah Buechley (she/her) is a Professor of computer science and fine art (by courtesy) at the University of New Mexico, where she directs the Hand and Machine research group. Her work explores integrations of technology, art, craft, and design. Buechley’s current research focuses on developing materials and tools for 3D printing in metal, glass, ceramic, and biomaterials. She received a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a BA in Physics from Skidmore College. At both institutions, she also studied dance, theater, and fine art. @handandmachine | handandmachine.org



HAYSTACK FAB LAB RESIDENTS
The Fab Lab at Haystack is a dynamic space where traditional craft meets digital fabrication, equipped with tools including 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines. It provides an environment for experimentation, enhancing the creative potential within studio programs. At the core of the Fab Lab’s evolution is the Fab Lab Resident program. In targeted sessions, two Residents—selected for their expertise in craft and digital fabrication—will undertake independent research and experimental projects aimed at advancing the field of craft through innovative techniques and materials. Residents will also engage the broader Haystack community through open studio events, demonstrations, and collaborations with faculty and students. This program provides an opportunity for Residents to push the boundaries of craft, explore new processes, and contribute to ongoing research in the Fab Lab. Participants can expect to learn from the Residents, participate in their campus activities, and be inspired by their work at the intersection of craft and digital innovation. HAYSTACK FAB LAB
Founded in 2011, Haystack collaborated with MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms to establish a cutting-edge digital fabrication and technology studio on campus, referred to as the Fab Lab. Since its establishment, the lab has become an integral part of the School’s overall mission to think more broadly about the field of craft and expanded into developing new innovative and community programs. In 2016, the Haystack Fab Lab was recognized with the Distinguished Educators Award from the James Renwick Alliance, the first ever given to a program for pioneering contributions to craft education.

During the Summer Workshops, the Fab Lab integrates with specific workshops where faculty have chosen to include digital fabrication in their workshop curriculum. The Fab Lab is available to participants in workshops that explicitly integrate the lab into their instructional plans, and does not operate as an open-access makerspace. This ensures that the Fab Lab’s tools are used intentionally, aligning with each workshop’s goals for focused and meaningful engagement.

In winter, the Fab Lab serves as a vital resource for community-based education, outreach, and digital fabrication training. The Community Artist and Maker Program Series (CAMPS) offers dynamic programming including community-based education and collaboration in crafts and making. We have also been building capacity to expand our work within the local school system on Deer Isle and around the broader Blue Hill Peninsula, by integrating digital technology and design proficiency into area classrooms.
