Scripted Squares 2010 Harvard Student Art Show Selection
Scripted Squares was created with RhinoScript, a computer scripting language based on Microsoft's VBScript. RhinoScript is run in parallel with Rhinoceros, a software used to produce 3-Dimensional digital models. These models are made from NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) mathematical representations of 3-D geometry. The numerical accuracy of digital models creates a tension with the more intuitive or spontaneous aspect of design production. This piece is rooted in the dialogue between hand and digital craft and the questions of authorship and composition that emerge from working in both methods. Scripted Squares began as a 3-D study of architectural space that was collapsed into the two-dimensional image seen here.
